About the role
We are looking for a Managing Director to lead Investment and Fund Operations for ATB Investment Management (ATBIM). This leader will be charged with ownership of the middle office, driving operational excellence and delivery scalability.
You will own the "Front-to-Back" flow of processes, data and assets, ensuring that whether assets are invested inside funds or in a bespoke Private Investment Counsel mandate, the process and experience is seamless, accurate, and scalable.
The scope is broad: ensuring operational readiness for a growing, complex product range (including current NI 81-102 funds, and potential future structures), delivering on the needs of our Investment Counsellors, leading the shift to new portfolio management platforms, designing and implementing a forward looking Target Operating Model (TOM), and governing our network of sub-advisors and custodians.
This position has a hybrid work arrangement located in either Edmonton or Calgary, AB. You’ll work both remote and onsite, where time onsite is based on your job accountabilities and performance objectives. Please note that this is subject to change due to business priorities.
Accountabilities
Operational Leadership: Drive middle-office excellence in a multi-manager environment, ensuring accurate trade confirmation, settlement, and reconciliation across global markets.
Fund Operations & Product Lifecycle Support: Own all elements of day to day fund operations for current and future products, structures and asset classes. Oversee the daily NAV (Net Asset Value) validation and unit-holder record-keeping.
Infrastructure & Governance: Partner with Technology, Finance, and Risk teams to own the operational environment, managing relationships with core service providers (eg. Custodians, Fund Administrators) under strict SLAs.
Trading Oversight: Collaboratively lead the Trading team, managing trade lifecycle execution and critical interfaces between systems and back-office functions.
Operational Due Diligence (ODD): Lead ODD for service providers and sub-advisors globally to ensure ATBIM’s assets and data remain protected.
People Leadership: Build, mentor, and coach a high-performing team through a multi-year transformation toward an operating model of the future.
Skills, experience & requirements
- Experience: 10–15+ years of progressive leadership in investment operations within a sophisticated asset management environment.
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of the trade lifecycle across public and private markets, including equities, fixed income, derivatives, and alternatives.
- Regulatory Mastery: Strong familiarity with Canadian regulatory environments (NI 81-102, CIRO, NI 31-103) and an understanding of global trends (SEC, FCA).
- Education: Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required; an MBA or professional designations (CFA, CPA, or CIM) are preferred.
- Platform Proficiency: Proven experience navigating and optimizing advanced wealth and portfolio management platforms.
