About the Role

The Director, Business Asset Recovery Team, leads a group of Account Managers responsible for enforcement and realizations of impaired borrowers with loans up to $2.5MM.

This leadership role is centered on managing client relationships and developing strategies aiming to facilitate the borrower’s exit and full repayment. The Director ensures that the team:

  • Deploys strategies to maximize recoveries and mitigate risks;
  • Achieves an appropriate returns given the level of risk where it is possible to fully recover our principal;
  • Delivers a consistent client experience reflective of ATB’s brand in the market through expert advice, transparency, and tone; and
  • Builds and evolves the business for the team, including preparing reporting, update processes, training, file and portfolio strategy best practices, etc.

The Director collaborates closely with the wider special loans team, along with various other internal teams, providing essential guidance, training, and support. They are also responsible for managing relationships with key service providers (e.g., law firms, Insolvency Trustees, and bailiffs), including ensuring our standards for service and work quality are met, and fees are reflective of the value provided. Furthermore, the position is responsible for delivering reporting insights to senior leadership. Success requires balancing excellent customer service with rigorous risk management.

Accountabilities

  • Support the team in negotiating with clients and other stakeholders, including being able to lead and navigate through difficult conversations with clients including de-escalating and resolving concerns;
  • Maintain a positive, collaborative, and high-performing team culture;
  • Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to team members, fostering personal and professional development;
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, set actionable goals, and provide constructive feedback to drive both team member development and portfolio performance improvement;
  • Work and communicate effectively with restructuring professionals, external counsel, valuators, and financial advisors;
  • Ensure that the team’s file strategies are appropriate and proactively executed;
  • Ensure full compliance with regulatory standards and internal controls;
  • Lead and work on other ad-hoc projects, including default management processes for new products, and administration of guarantee programs ensuring the goals and timelines are met;
  • Assessing financial performance, forecasts, and business plan to determine viable alternatives to ATB, including risk and opportunity;
  • Ensure high levels of due diligence is performed on businesses and guarantors to identify sources of repayment from both assets and cash flow;
  • Contribute and support the organization’s objectives in managing loan losses and ensure appropriate loan loss allowances are maintained;
  • Attract and retain top talent; and
  • Once well established into the role, time permitting, manage high risk commercial files directly with a mandate to return them to performance or exit the relationship as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven positive leadership and coaching skills;
  • Completion of Business degree or equivalent related experience;
  • At least 5 years of commercial lending/credit experience, including 3 years in commercial special loans experience, or commercial insolvency and restructuring;
  • Familiarity with Business Credit and security documents with a strong understanding of contract law as it pertains to security agreements;
  • Expertise in commercial and personal enforcement, including practical knowledge of realization processes and frameworks (e.g., Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, Civil Enforcement Act, Farm Debt Mediation Act, and Judicial Sales Orders;
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating Forbearance Agreements;
  • Strong negotiating and unique problem solving skills;
  • Strong financial analysis skills and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and experience conducting presentations to internal and external partners;
  • Capable of independently making sound decisions, including with limited available information;
  • Accomplished personal computer skills, including the use of G-Suite for day to day work process; and
  • A Client Obsessed focus and a desire to be a Champion of Belonging.

Additional Information

  • This position has a hybrid work arrangement. On average, this means 2 days on-site per week. Please note that this is subject to change due to business priorities.
  • This position will be filled at either the M or N level. The reporting structure for the position will be determined based on the experience of the candidate (i.e. directly to the Vice President of RAM, or another leader within the team).
