The University Endowment Lands (UEL) is an unincorporated area located between the City of Vancouver and the University of British Columbia, with a population of approximately 4,000 residents. The UEL administration office functions in a manner similar to a municipal office within a city or any other incorporated area within the province and provides a similar range of services.

Costs of providing services to the UEL, including public works, administration, water, and fire protection to residents, are recovered from residents through a combination of permit fees, water sales, licenses, other revenues and property taxes.

Under the supervision of the Public Works Foreman, the position has responsibility and accountability for the UEL municipal water distribution system and sewer systems. In addition, the position is responsible for public works support, including both grounds and municipal general maintenance. The position must be certified under the Drinking Water Protection Act and Regulations in order to ensure standards for safety and diligence are met with respect to the water distribution system in the UEL.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Valid Water Distribution Level I Operator Certificate issued by the Environmental Operators Certification Program or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Valid Water Distribution Level II and Wastewater Collection Level I are preferable.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as a Utility operator or equivalent, plus experience in the operation and maintenance of single rear axle gravel trucks and tractors equipped with backhoe attachments; preference may be given to applicants who have completed a recognized training program in the operation of single and tandem trucks and rubber-tired loader or backhoe in addition to experience.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in municipal maintenance.
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent with air brake certification-operating endorsement is preferable.
