Position Summary
BCIT’s Student Life department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Associate Director, Housing. This position sets the direction, develops the plans and oversees the management for BCIT’s Student Housing. Responsible for ensuring BCIT residents are provided with a safe, inclusive, wellness-focused environment where they can reach their fullest learning potential. Provides oversight and direction of resident admissions, programming, well-being, facilities, maintenance, cleaning and other related services. Assists the Senior Director in achieving divisional objectives, manages special projects and advises the Senior Director on a variety of issues and initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • In partnerships with Facilities & Campus Development, ensures all new and existing BCIT Housing is innovative, well maintained and meets the unique needs of the student population.
  • Leads the development and regular review of standards, operating procedures, systems and services to ensure effective business practices for Student Housing are in place, consistent and in compliance with the Institute’s policies and strategic plan.
  • Develops and oversees departmental planning and direction for housing admission processes, ensuring an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens while recognizing the unique needs of BCIT’s varying program lengths and year-round start dates and apprenticeship programs.
  • Provides strategic advice to the Senior Director and other senior leaders on the Institute’s most critical housing strategies, initiatives, practices and challenges. Chairs and/or participates on related Institute committees and teams, consults with campus stakeholders on housing related issues and solutions
  • Oversees the management and development of administrative, service delivery and Resident Life systems, ensuring they are scalable and can accommodate future expansion of campus housing.
  • Manages annual budget planning process, spending, and internal and external financial reporting for all aspects of BCIT Student Housing in excess of $8 million. Leads tactical planning on leveraging Student Housing for additional income opportunities as appropriate.
  • Ensures resourcing and housing plans are in place to actively support student recruitment and retention initiatives, ensuring that they support flexible accommodations and are able to meet the unique needs of varying programs’ needs.
  • Maintains awareness of emerging trends, practices, legislation and regulatory requirements in housing in post-secondary education, competing environments and related business environments. Engages in environmental scans, develops relationships with external contacts and participates in professional organizations.
  • Manages residence emergency response plans and procedures in conjunction with SSEM, including maintenance and updating of Student Housing Business Continuity Plans; ensures all department staff are trained in emergency response procedures and provides leadership in emergencies. Conducts regular practice sessions, fire drills and emergency response exercises.
  • Oversees the development, implementations, and the management of Student Housing systems and procedures. Ensures resourcing and support are in place to support reviews and continual improvements; Accountable for overseeing the effectiveness and relevancy of administrative systems, policies, processes, and records management;
  • Accountable for ensuring 24 hr critical crisis/emergency response plans are in place and align with the overarching Institute’s safety & security measures. Ensures emergency first responders or counsellor care is actioned for student emergency situations that occur in housing.
  • Hires and coordinates external contractors and liaises with internal BCIT service providers concerning facility projects, renovations and repairs.
  • Manages reporting staff, including selection, coaching, mentoring, development, performance management and all other people-management practices.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in an education, counselling or student affairs discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience at progressive levels of responsibility in student housing
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Expert knowledge of the concepts, theories, and practices related to student housing, wellbeing, accessibility, and equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal communication skills with proven success coaching and mentoring staff and developing collaborative and effective teams. Solid experience with operational leadership in a unionized environment
  • Proven experience with capital management and financial planning
  • Strong background in policy, procedures and systems development, implementation and administration.
  • Experience in developing and administering community standards and an understanding of the principles of administrative fairness.
  • Excellent conflict resolution, facilitation, mediation, intervention and crisis management skills.
  • Strong project planning and management skills.
  • Experience with facilities operations, property maintenance and renovations in multi-unit dwellings, including cleaning and landscape specifications and compliance.
  • Excellent attention to detail, planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Availability and commitment to work on an on-call basis around the clock, and to frequently lead operations outside of regular work schedules throughout the year, is essential.
