Position Summary
BCIT’s Digital Arts, Media and Design department within the School of Business + Media offers a range of programs in the areas of Animation and Gaming, Web and Mobile, and Communication and Graphics. We are currently seeking a temporary, part-time (0.2 FTE) Instructor to teach courses to full-time students in the Diploma in 3D Modeling, Art and Animation, from May to August 2026.
Duties & Responsibilities
The instructor assignment is for:
  • MDAA 2542 Lighting and Rendering 2 (20%)
    • ​Students will examine the effects of lights, cameras, and surface interactions. Students will set up cameras and camera effects and create a shading network for a high-quality 3D scene that is optimized for efficient rendering. Both offline and real-time renderers will be explored, and the benefits to both will be examined. Students will be able to render their shots in passes and composite them together in an editing package. Focusing on industry-standard presentation techniques, camera moves, pacing, and framing will be explored so students can showcase their work effectively.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in lighting, look development, or rendering for film, animation, visual effects, or game development.
  • Demonstrated expertise in 3D lighting and rendering workflows using Autodesk Maya and industry-standard render engines such as Redshift, Arnold, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of lighting theory, including the principles of illumination, reference-based lighting, and mood creation through lighting design.
  • Experience optimizing render settings, sampling, and quality control for efficient production rendering.
  • Familiarity with camera workflows and cinematic presentation, including camera placement, depth of field, motion blur, and shot composition.
  • Experience rendering multi-pass images (AOVs/render passes) and integrating them into compositing workflows.
  • Proficiency with node-based compositing software, such as Nuke, for assembling render passes and improving final imagery.
  • Working knowledge of linear workflows and colour management, including sRGB and ACES pipelines.
  • Experience with render layers, render setup, and shot-based lighting workflows used in production pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of lighting for animated sequences, ensuring continuity, visual interest, and storytelling through lighting.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous post-secondary teaching or mentoring experience.
  • Professional experience working as a Lighting Artist, Look Development Artist, or Rendering TD in film, animation, or games.
  • Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including: 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering.
  • Experience in Redshift, Arnold, and Unreal Engine.

Salary Range $65,045 - $113,545 per annum
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
