Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Business + Media is seeking an instructor to teach in the UI/UX Associate Certificate Program at the Royal Roads University – John Horgan Campus in Langford, BC. Courses will be delivered face-to-face and include GDES 2150 Introductory UI/UX and MDIA 2330 UI/UX Prototyping Tools.
Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, student-centred educator with strong practical experience in user interface and user experience design, including user research, prototyping, and usability testing. We are looking for an individual who demonstrates a commitment to teaching excellence, inclusivity, and innovation in a rapidly evolving design industry. The ideal candidate values collaboration, contributes positively to a team environment, and is dedicated to supporting student success. The successful applicant can expect to deliver UI/UX curriculum, provide constructive feedback, and maintain alignment with program learning outcomes while fostering an engaging and supportive learning environment.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design, User Experience Design, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant industry experience in UI/UX design, interaction design, or a related field, with demonstrated proficiency in user research, prototyping, and usability testing.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience at the post-secondary level or a clear commitment to developing teaching skills, including willingness to take courses in BCIT’sAssociate Certificate in Polytechnic Teaching if not already held.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools, including Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud and related applications used for UI/UX work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly, provide constructive critique, and support diverse learners.
  • Evidence of professional engagement with the design industry, such as client work, studio practice, freelance work, or participation in professional organizations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in a fast-paced, team-oriented academic environment.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in teaching and design practice.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong rapport with students and create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment.
  • Approachable, adaptable, and receptive to feedback, with a willingness to update curriculum and teaching methods to reflect emerging UI/UX design practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in UI/UX design, including information architecture, interaction design patterns, accessibility standards, and mobile-first design principles.
  • Experience teaching UI/UX across different levels (introductory to advanced) or in multiple program contexts.
  • Familiarity with contemporary UI/UX trends, including design systems, variable components, and accessibility considerations in interface design.
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills, including the ability to guide critiques and evaluate student work effectively and fairly.
  • Experience developing instructional materials, assignments, or assessments aligned with program learning outcomes.
  • Active involvement in the design community, such as attending conferences, professional development workshops, or participating in professional organizations.
  • Ability to integrate real-world examples from industry practice to enhance student learning and career readiness.

Salary Range Salary Range: $81.30 to $121.96 per contact hour, inclusive of vacation and holiday pay.
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
