Position Summary
BCIT’s Library Services department is seeking two (2) regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Audiovisual Services Technicians.This position is responsible for providing a wide range of audiovisual and related IT technical support services for BCIT’s main and satellite campuses. Duties include installation, trouble-shooting and maintenance of multiple product lines such as overhead projectors, multimedia projectors, analog and digital audio and video equipment, laptop computers and circulating mobile computer carts, AV control systems, staging of special events, demonstration of equipment operation, remote system monitoring and playing a functional security role. The AV Service Technician also provides technical support and equipment services for meetings and special events on and off campus.

Please note: one position will work an irregular work week (Tuesday-Saturday).
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Customer Service/Technical:

Outgoing:
  • Performs client needs assessment, and demonstrations or instruction for clients as required
  • Ensures all equipment is in good operating order prior to the client taking possession of the equipment
  • May assist in delivery and set-up of equipment
  • Delivers orientation and instruction for utilizing new technologies

Incoming:
  • Performs a check of equipment for any errors, malfunctions, service problems, missing items, upon its return
  • Diagnoses equipment problems and determines best means for repair
  • Checks integrity of laptop operating system and files, digital camera memory cards and various other equipment add-ons upon their return

Customer Service/Booking:
  • Provides timely and effective customer service to faculty, staff, and students
  • Supports the circulation and help desk function via walk-ins, e-mail, paper files and electronic booking applications (e.g., Web Checkout), during hectic periods or circulation staff absences.
  • Performs inventory checks to facilitate the circulation process

Customer Service/Trouble-shooting:
  • Responds to a wide variety of audiovisual requests, inquiries, and service calls from faculty, staff, and students throughout the many campuses. For example:
    • data projector malfunctions
    • overhead projector problems
    • laptop / projector / control system issues
    • malfunctioning microphones, camcorders, document cameras, control systems, ‘clickers’ (CPS hardware and/or software), televisions, etc.
  • Monitors and handles cell phone calls to facilitate ad hoc trouble-shooting assignments
  • Facilitates the entry of inventory data and work orders to check data on equipment
  • Uses help desk software (e.g., Cherwell) to log, manage, and follow through on help
  • requests
  • Liaises with other institute departments and vendors

Customer Service /evenings and weekends:
As the assigned AV technician supporting part-time studies during weekday late afternoons/evenings and/or Saturday:
  • Acts as the main contact for AV Services with potential for a flexible or modified schedule

Technical Maintenance:
  • Sets-up, operates, and troubleshoot s a variety of Audio Visual equipment
  • Maintains AV workshops including day to day tidiness, requisitions for new or
  • replacement tools, equipment and supplies
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repair of a variety of Audio Visual equipment
  • (e.g. circulation, staging, classroom equipment, etc.)
  • Performs client needs assessment, and if required, conducts demonstrations and/or
  • provides instructions for clients.
  • Performs various installations (e.g., hardware, software, programming) and assists in
  • defining and planning the optimum integration layout of various AV equipment set-ups
  • including:
    • assembly/disassembly and combinations of video
    • monitors/projectors/carts
    • design, installation, and integration of AV equipment with computer
    • equipment in instructor workstations, mobile installations (e.g., smart
    • carts, smart shop carts, etc.)
    • positioning or integration of AV workstations/podiums and equipment into workshops, classrooms, etc.
    • AV control systems (e.g., Crestron)
  • Liaises with ITS network services and other personnel
  • Updates and maintains equipment usage instructions for equipment, rooms and web
  • site information for distribution including liaising with suppliers, manufacturers, web
  • content coordinators and end users
  • Acts as the designated AV contact/coordinator for specific vendor install activities as
  • required
  • Coordinates and supports IP videoconferencing
  • Provides expertise on AV capital expenditures and purchases; Makes equipment
  • purchase recommendations to AV Operations Supervisor/Technical Liaison

Staging of Special Events:
Special event staging requests are requested through the AV Lead Technician orOperations Supervisor/Technical Liaison. Staging assignments may occur at BCIT Burnabyor at off-campus locations such as satellite campuses, graduation in Willingdon Church,and various other ad hoc situations.

Duties include:
  • making recommendations regarding equipment for special events;
  • Recommending rental equipment options (from in-house inventory and
  • sometimes external rental equipment)
  • physical on-site set-up and verification that the equipment is appropriate to the venue and working properly
  • Operation of AV equipment during special events as required
  • Providing equipment demonstrations to presenters to ensure that the presenters are able to operate the AV equipment
  • tear-down of equipment
  • Arranging delivery and return of the equipment, if courier services are required

Security Issues:
AV Service Technicians are responsible for maintaining the security of installed and circulating AV equipment, and must be vigilant in securing equipment and liaising with BCIT Safety and Security. AV Service Technicians are responsible for keys to all AV storage depots, instructor workstations, lecture theatres and to most offices, labs, and classrooms.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Definition:
The qualifications section for this position was developed using the approved job evaluation plan, agreed to between the BCGEU and BCIT. The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected in job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.

Education:
  • Requires the equivalent of completion of specialized training programs of up to two year’s duration such as a Diploma of Technology or completion of a two-year full-time program from a Community College, preferably a certificate in electronics. Formal training in audio-visual services (i.e. industry training, seminars, associated credentialing such as electronics training or Certified Technology Specialist)

Experience:
  • Two years technical experience plus two years in an AV customer service environment. Experience must include troubleshooting AV equipment in a customer service context. Experience with AV control systems would be an asset.

Software/Computer Application(s):
  • Functional experience with various O/S, in particular various versions of Windows, in order to facilitate the technician’s trouble-shooting/diagnostic role. Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Powerpoint, Excel and Word. Considerable knowledge of Institute group-ware, as designated by BCIT, such as Cherwell, Web Checkout, Crestron control systems and programming, video conferencing technology remote monitoring, diagnostic and control systems, and web-applications. Working knowledge of IP videoconferencing. Commissioning of new smart installations or equipment including diagnosing network connectivity issues, software/hardware conflicts, etc. Understanding of how AV equipment and computers are used together, an interest in and functional experience with personal computers is expected. Ability to update systems and software images in anticipation of software upgrades or security issues (e.g. attacks from peripherals).

Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
  • As an ambassador for AV Services and BCIT, incumbents must have well-developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Tact and discretion are required. Ability to translate technical data into client instructions. Ability to incorporate data into instruction forms suitable for use on workstations, portable equipment and on the secure area on the AV website.

Other Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience with AV equipment inventory, circulation and repair software. Ability to provide technical support for a range of audio visual equipment. Excellent problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast paced environment. Valid BC Drivers’ license Ability to lift 40 lbs. Ability to work in confined spaces.
