Position Summary
BCIT’s Library Services department is currently seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Media and Maker Technology Specialist. The position conducts operations of MediaWorks, providing support and instruction, to staff and students with graphics/illustration; signage; digital media projects; multimedia presentations, with digital video, digital audio; 3D printing/design; laser cutting, virtual/augmented reality; and other makerspace equipment.

Please note: this position will work an irregular work week (Tuesday-Saturday).
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains a creative, safe and fun workspace for MediaWorks clients.
  • Develops, plans and executes digital media, AR, VR and maker-space related technology programming.
  • Seeks out and engages with librarians and staff/faculty to encourage curriculum project collaboration that utilizes MediaWorks services and staff expertise.
  • Works with staff and students to conceptualize and create presentations, graphics, video, audio, signage, and other digital media assets for delivery in print, screen, and other multimedia formats.
  • Advises on and demonstrates suitable techniques for achieving the client’s objectives from project scope, content, target audience, creative approach, and delivery mode.
  • Advises clients on appropriate media, costs, timelines and production process.
  • Collaborates with staff and students on product development projects ranging from design, 3D modelling, prototyping, to physical production using a 3D printer, laser cutter, or other device including:
    • Designing, prototyping, and printing out 3D designed files on 3D printers;
    • Designing files for use on a laser cutter to engrave, score and cut on a variety of materials;
    • Advising, consulting and assisting staff and students with media production and maker space projects, referring clients to other on and off campus services where appropriate.
  • Designs and develops marketing materials to promote library activities in co-ordination with the library Marketing Specialist.
  • Promotes departmental services with Library Marketing Specialist to assist with the creation of print and multimedia materials for the departmental website, as well as general social media presence.
  • Prepares job aids for equipment operation and demonstrates operation of media production and maker space equipment to clients
  • Conceptualizes, prepares and presents workshops on media production and maker space techniques on behalf of the department for staff and students.
  • Demonstrates and facilitates development of projects using Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies.
  • Provides tours and presentations on MediaWorks and Library services.
  • Supports satellite campus library staff on the use and maintenance of 3D printers and other technologies set-up on site such as AR/VR.
  • Coordinates internal and external services such as audio and video digitization, etc. as needed
  • Creates and applies safety protocols for use of maker space equipment and tools
  • Researches, explores and advises management on procurement and use of new and emerging technologies in the library through ongoing professional development.
  • Liaises with related on-campus services to deal with issues of referrals, pricing, equipment compatibility, copyright and areas of co-operation and overlap.
  • Assists faculty, staff, and students with the daily operation of a wide variety of media preparation equipment and software.
  • Investigates hardware and Windows/Macintosh operating systems and computer applications used in media production, digital editing and post-production; 3D modeling, scanning, and print slicing to determine availability, performance and compatibility with existing equipment for instructional, informational or marketing purposes.
  • Keeps informed about trends in media production, 3D printing, and makerspaces through ongoing professional development.

Other related duties:
  • Ensures production equipment is serviced and maintained in good working order.
  • Researches cost and availability of equipment, external production resources and consumables.
  • Collaborate with instructors to create work-based learning opportunities through practicum student placements.
  • Attend BCIT inter-departmental meetings to stay informed and contribute to teaching and learning technologies and strategies.
  • Works with Open Education to recommend suitable open-source software options and best working practices for custom project creation.
  • Store digital assets and creations in content management system with applicable metadata tags
  • Tracks cross charges, cash revenue and free services
  • Provides month end and statistical reports on usage of equipment and services.
  • Maintains a comprehensive equipment inventory and consumables supply needed for makerspace activities.
  • Performs the following duties from time to time, as required: travel to other British Columbia locations, work overtime, load and transport of production equipment
  • Ensures compliance of safety protocols
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade for this position.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Definition:
The qualifications section for this position was developed using the approved job evaluation plan, agreed to between the BCGEU and BCIT. The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected on Job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.

Education:
  • Completion of Grade 12, plus completion of a two-year diploma program in non-print media production, including digital video and multimedia production.

License(s) / certification(s):
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Experience:
  • Two years of general experience, plus a minimum of five-years’ professional experience in video, audio, graphics and digital multi-media technologies, two years of which experience is working with post-secondary students and faculty

Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
  • Demonstrated ability in Windows and Macintosh computer applications used in media production, digital editing and post-production; 3D modeling, scanning, and 3D print slicing.
  • Experience with at least 2 of the following: web design, multimedia, video/ audio production, 3D design, 3D scanning, laser-cutting software, and technology training/teaching.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of maker space concepts and technologies (especially 3D printing), Augmented and Virtual Reality systems, and other emerging technologies.

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills to consult and advice clients on projects.
  • Must be a team player, with demonstrated ability to work in the dual role of project participant and project leader.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to understand and articulate the vision of the production/item the student is working on.

  • Ability to multitask and manage a variety of simultaneous projects and deadlines.
