Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Assistant Instructor to support the Forest and Natural Areas Management (FNAM) and the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation (FWR) programs in the delivery of a range of courses within the FNAM and FWR diploma programs.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Forest and Natural Areas Management (FNAM) and the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation (FWR) program are both practical two-year diploma that is part of the Renewable Resources Department at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology). These two diploma programs are designed to give students a broad range of applied skills, experiences, and knowledge for careers in the dynamic and diverse field of natural resource management and stewardship.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Diploma in forestry, fisheries, wildlife, ecology, or related discipline.
  • Three years of recent field experience in the areas of environmental monitoring, fish & wildlife, parks & recreation, and/or forestry.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including experience working with multiple, diverse partners and resolving conflicts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and the ability to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs and challenges of a dynamic and evolving program.
  • Physically able to lead groups of students on moderately challenging outdoor related field activities that may involve several consecutive days and overnight trips.
  • Experience developing and implementing field safety plans for field-based and on-campus teaching environments.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Basic First Aid certification.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant professional designation in the field of biology, ecological restoration, etc. (e.g., RBTech, RP Bio, RFT, RPF, AScT)
  • Familiarity with and ability to include multiple knowledge sources and perspectives as it relates to course content, in particular engaging relevant Indigenous knowledge-holders, and land stewards.
  • Strong plant identification skills, including familiarity with plant biology, terminology and use
  • Familiarity with biology concepts and comfort with supporting delivery of biology labs
  • Experience with hydrology and earth science concepts in the field
  • Training in instructional skills, such as the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (PIDP), instructional skills workshop, etc.
  • Experience assisting with marking and supporting student learning in classroom, field, and on-line settings, including familiarity with online learning management systems.
  • Valid Class 4 Driver’s License

Salary Range Salary Range: $72,334 - $98,815 per annum
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
