Position Summary
BCIT’s Health, Safety & Environment department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Health, Safety & Environment Coordinator. This position provides guidance and direction regarding the interpretation, administration and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety policies, programs and procedures to ensure the health and safety of staff, students and visitors, and that facilities, property, equipment and procedures comply with Campus policy and statutory requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, implements and maintains BCIT Occupational Health and Safety programs as required by BCIT policy, the Worker’s Compensation Board Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and other appropriate legislation.
  • Assists departments in developing safety plans and safe work procedures for specific work areas and/or work activities.
  • Attends and acts as resource at various Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings.
  • Assists with the characterization of occupational exposures to hazards through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to determine health risks and regulatory compliance.
  • Assists with the development of control measures to mitigate occupational health and safety issues via elimination, engineering, administrative, or personal protective methods.
  • Assists with implementing the BCIT incident investigation program, including helping to conduct incident investigations, auditing incident investigation report and ensuring completion and submission of documentation related to WCB and Institute insurance programs.
  • Performs ergonomic assessments for the BCIT community, and coordinates annual fire drills.
  • Develops and administers education/training materials/sessions for the BCIT community related to Occupational Health and Safety programs.
  • Maintains a highly visible presence on campus during the completion of the above tasks.
  • Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected in job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.

Education:
  • A Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety.

License(s)/Certifications(s):
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

Experience:
  • Two years of general experience in a similar, relevant Occupational Health and Safety position working with applicable legislation
  • One year of experience in occupational exposure monitoring methods, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), laboratory safety, ergonomics, hearing conservation, asbestos management, lead management, indoor air quality, confined space entry, fall protection, protective equipment, fire safety, electrical safety and environmental management.

Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
  • Advanced word processing and database skills.

Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Strong analytical reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a team.

Other Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Board Occupational Health and Safety regulations, Workers’ Compensations Act and applicable municipal, provincial and federal regulations.

Salary Range Salary Range: $80,568 - 86,721 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
