Overview

Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform is an AI Companion which helps advertisers set up and troubleshoot their campaigns, generate high performing creatives (text, image and video), and answer any questions that they have. We are a fast-moving team of engineers and applied scientists leveraging the latest Generative AI technology to build these tools.


We are looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to lead the development of the Copilot Chat Assistant to help advertisers navigate every step of their journey. You will work with engineers and applied scientists to build systems that leverage multiple LLMs (Large Language Models), agentic frameworks (like Semantic Kernels), vector databases, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and tool automation to solve complex tasks. Your work will directly impact the topline revenue metrics for Microsoft Ads.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience using machine learning to build live production systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ year experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
  • 7+ year experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.
  • Experience using LLMs, agentic frameworks, RAG, vector databases to build complex production systems.

Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Stay up to date on the latest advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) and ways to leverage them to solve complex business tasks.
  • Work closely with engineers and product managers to understand the business requirements for Copilot Assistant.
  • Lead a team of engineers and applied scientists to achieve business objectives.
  • Leverage agentic frameworks (such as Semantic Kernel) to create LLM workflows to automate common tasks for advertisers.
  • Engineer optimal prompts for various LLM calls, using chain-of-thought and other advanced techniques.
  • Use Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases to answer questions about Microsoft Advertising Platform.
  • Develop tools to expand the capabilities of Copilot Assistant.
