Overview
Microsoft 365 Copilot is a groundbreaking productivity tool that leverages the power of large language models, user data, Microsoft Graph, and the web to drive unparalleled creativity and productivity. At the heart of this innovation is the Office Artificial Intelligence (AI) team, which plays a crucial role in the development of Copilot experience across M365. This spans from the chat user experience to the middle-tier service that runs AI-powered workflows and horizontal skills, and extends across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and many partners across Microsoft.
We are seeking a mid-career Senior Data and Applied Scientist to help shape the future of productivity through data-driven insights and scalable evaluation systems. This role will focus on designing metrics, analyzing user interactions, and supporting experimentation for AI-powered features across Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techn
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical tec
- OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ years customer-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.
- 5+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or applied statistics.
- Solid programming skills in Python, R, or similar languages.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Solid understanding of experimental design and statistical analysis.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with productivity tools, user behavior analysis, or AI feature evaluation.
- Familiarity with Microsoft data platforms (e.g., Azure ML, Kusto).
- Ability to work cross-functionally and influence product direction through data.
- Strong communication skills and ability to translate insights into action.

Responsibilities
- Design and implement evaluation pipelines for AI features across Office applications.
- Define success metrics to assess performance, reliability, and user satisfaction.
- Analyze telemetry, feedback, and experiment results to identify improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with PM, engineering, and partner teams to guide product development through data.
- Build dashboards and reporting tools to monitor feature health and business impact.
- Support experimentation and rollout strategies for new Office AI capabilities.
- Contribute to cross-team efforts to align on evaluation standards and data practices.
