Overview
The Devices Team is Microsoft’s studio of product makers who create the next generation of computing experiences. We go end-to-end from initial concept to shipped product, responsible for every experience users have with our hardware and software. Our team translates Microsoft’s vision for Local, Cloud, and AI computing devices into meaningful products that people will love and need.
We are seeking a Senior Designer to join this team, where you’ll translate innovative concepts into functional prototypes that bring together hardware and software experiences. This role bridges the gap between our diverse specialties, ensuring every user touchpoint feels seamless and meaningful. You’ll build working prototypes that demonstrate multimodal experiences through haptics, sound, motion graphics, and AI-powered interactions, with technical skills spanning modern coding technologies, 3D design tools, and hardware prototyping.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 5+ years experience working in product or service design
- OR Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 4+ years experience working in product or service design
- OR equivalent experience.
- 4+ years experience shipping products, services, or games and/or delivering to customers as a result of an end-to-end design process.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design,
- OR related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design.
- Proficiency in modern web development technologies including React, TypeScript, JavaScript, and version control systems like Git.
- Experience with three-dimensional (3D) design and motion graphics tools such as Cinema 4D, Blender, After Effects, Rhino, or SolidWorks.
- Demonstrated ability to build functional prototypes combining hardware components and software applications, with portfolio showcasing end-to-end product development.
Product Design IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities
- Create compelling product pitches and build comprehensive portfolios showcasing next-generation devices and experiences, including documentation, demos, and presentations that communicate product vision to stakeholders and leadership.
- Design and build functional prototypes that combine hardware sensors, circuit boards, and software applications to demonstrate multimodal user experiences.
- Develop interactive applications using React, TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python that respond to various sensory inputs including voice, touch, motion, and camera input.
- Create motion graphics and three-dimensional (3D) interfaces using Cinema 4D, Blender, After Effects, Rhino, or SolidWorks that translate into real-time interactive experiences.
- Prototype hardware solutions using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and electronics components including hall sensors, capacitive touch, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and communication protocols like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including industrial designers, User Experience (UX) designers, visual designers, sound designers, and researchers to translate concepts into working demonstrations.
- Build Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered experiences using Large Language Models (LLMs) and Small Language Models (SLMs) that feel intuitive and magical for end users.
- Ship consumer products from initial concept through manufacturing, ensuring end-to-end quality and seamless integration of hardware and software components.
