Overview

Join the Surface AI Subsystem Team, where we architect and deliver the foundational AI infrastructure and intelligence layer that makes Surface devices smarter, safer, and more adaptive. Our mission is to enable seamless, secure, and proactive integration of AI features across Surface devices, Windows Copilot, and the broader Microsoft ecosystem.

As a Software Engineer II, you’ll shape the infrastructure that enables Surface to introduce intelligent AI agents. You’ll design systems that support Model Context Protocol (MCP), agent-to-agent communication, and secure LLM-driven experiences at hyperscale. You will be empowered to make product-wide technical decisions to push the Windows ecosystem forward and showcase Microsoft’s commitment to delivering transformational AI experiences, with advanced hardware and software integration, security and Copilot features.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience designing and developing software solutions in production environments.
  • Experience working with Windows systems and/or telemetry or inference pipelines.
  • 1+ years of experience in AI systems or intelligent device platforms.

Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft AI ecosystem (Windows AI Foundry, Copilot, WCRT APIs) or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with multimodal AI, agentic workflows, or NPU based optimizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Solid communication skills and experience contributing to platform or product development.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the orchestration of multimodal AI scenarios and coordinate with subsystem teams to build and scale MCP server infrastructure for agentic workflows.
  • Design and implement on-device AI agents to enable autonomous and semi-autonomous system behaviors using telemetry and inference.
  • Develop and deploy AI-powered tools to enhance developer productivity, automate triage, test selection, and regression analysis.
  • Collaborate with security and platform teams to ensure secure recovery environments, content provenance, and protection of sensitive IP.
  • Align Surface AI solutions with Windows AI Foundry, WCRT (Windows Copilot Runtime) APIs, and contribute to protocol standardization across the Microsoft ecosystem.
  • Deliver and support AI-assisted debugging, diagnostics, and productivity tools for Surface engineering and factory operations.
  • Drive enterprise readiness by supporting manageability, compliance, and ecosystem standards for Surface AI features.
