Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the CHSE (Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

This role will work cross-functionally with engineering teams to drive comprehensive, end-to-end execution across disciplines, suppliers, and adjacent organizations such as hardware infrastructure, systems integration, and cloud services. It encompasses engineering operations and execution excellence, engineering program management, and engineering orchestration and process. Responsibilities include the automated collection of execution metrics, along with the development of dashboards and reporting tools for leadership. The role emphasizes enterprise-level program delivery, resource utilization, and scalable hardware engineering processes, while managing cross-organizational engagement and feedback loops to continuously improve deployment and operational outcomes. It also involves defining and enforcing engineering fundamentals such as specification templates, change management, and supplier coordination.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 11+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Experience leading engineering teams.
  • Hands on experience delivering data center hardware systems from concept to end of life.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 15+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of people management experience.

Hardware Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and build a team of hardware systems engineers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams, suppliers, and adjacent organizations to drive comprehensive, end-to-end execution across hardware infrastructure, systems integration, and cloud services.
  • Lead the development and implementation of engineering operations and execution frameworks, including automated metric collection and structured reporting tools for leadership visibility.
  • Design and maintain dashboards that support data-driven decision-making for staffing, project tracking, and performance management.
  • Manage enterprise-level engineering programs, ensuring timely delivery of projects aligned with product specifications and business goals.
  • Define and enforce engineering fundamentals such as specification templates, change management protocols, and supplier coordination processes.
  • Facilitate cross-organizational engagement and feedback loops to continuously improve deployment and operational outcomes.
  • Champion scalable, structured, and disciplined hardware engineering processes that support reliable product development and resource utilization.
  • Collaborate with internal, external, and open-source partners to onboard innovative technologies in a seamless manner.
  • Experience working in the E2E Solution space of the server design collaborating with several cross functional teams across silicon, platform, and customer teams.
