Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Within Azure Data, the business intelligence team builds and maintains Power BI which is the undisputed leader in BI tool in the industry today and serves as the bridge between data professionals & Office users. Power BI’s core value proposition is to enable end users to get answers & insights from their data through data visualization.
Within Power BI, this role as a Principal Engineering Manager will lead an established team of 8-10 software engineers spanning from new-to-career to experienced. As an agile and largely full-stack team, you'll have the opportunity to own scenarios end-to-end, working closely across product management, design & engineering. Designing UX experiences and the middle & backend services to power them. Building off Microsoft's leadership in artificial Intelligence, the focus is on applying LLM's and machine learning patterns to enable natural language interactions with all types of data.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ years people management experience.
- 3+ years experience with large scale, highly distributed systems, including distributed caching, active-active patterns, monitoring & alerting.
Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
- This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience developing on or with AI, including prompt engineering, familiarity with RAG patterns & vector databases
- Experience with business intelligence products such as Power BI, Tableau including data engineering, modelling and reporting
- Familiarity with large scale, highly distributed systems, including distributed caching, active-active patterns, monitoring & alerting
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities
- As a people manager, you'll be tasked with attracting, retaining and growing strong engineering talent. This includes developing tailored career plans for each individual’s capabilities and aspirations & supporting them through active coaching and feedback.
- Guide efforts to ensure best practices are employed for scalability, security, privacy, accessibility and more. Ensure highly available and reliable feature/service offerings.
- Provide opportunities for experienced engineers to lead, but ultimately ensure code and architecture quality are maintained. Focus on extensible, maintainable & well factored code. Define, track and utilize quality metrics & telemetry to guide investments. While also factoring needs for engineering enablement & productivity.
- Partner closely with product and design partners to influence product strategy & achieve business goals. Including meeting and supporting customer directly, balancing feature design aspirations with technical capabilities, with a clear focus on an ROI based approach.
