The opportunity

As the Senior Solution Architect, Applied Intelligence, the incumbent will play a vital role in designing and architecting AI systems. The incumbent will lead the technical implementation of the AI engineering strategy, translating the roadmap defined by leadership into scalable, secure, and resilient AI architectures and platforms. This role will be responsible for building systems that are used enterprise wide and also systems specific to business units.

Who you'll work with

The incumbent will report to the Senior Manager, Applied Intelligence, and be the technical lead for a team of highly skilled engineers. They will also be responsible for overseeing relationships with key vendors and partners, managing services, processes, and KPIs to ensure optimal levels of quality and service. They will work with different business teams and stakeholders across the organization.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement agentic systems that are not only highly scalable but also secure and responsive.

  • Lead the design and implementation of internal AI systems and platforms such as Teachers’ AI Platform and the Knowledge Management Platform

  • Lead technical discovery sessions and present architecture recommendations.

  • Accountable for system resilience and stability of AI platforms including uptime targets and automated testing coverage. Contributes to broader team KPIs including platform adoption and delivery lead time.

  • Responsible for ensuring all AI platform implementations adhere to Ontario Teachers' AI governance principles including privacy, security, and compliance requirements. Works in conjunction with the AIRA process to assess and mitigate AI related risks in technical designs and implementations

  • Collaborate with different business users, business technology groups, and product owners in enabling AI capabilities

  • Mentor the junior engineers and help develop their technical capabilities

  • Collaborate in deep architectural discussions to ensure solutions are designed for successful deployment, security, and availability

  • Stay abreast of the latest AI trends and technologies to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of AI innovation.

  • Engages all relevant stakeholders and secures the requisite sign-offs.

  • Expected to monitor and report progress with minimal direct supervision

  • Fosters a positive, progressive team-based attitude

  • Develops a recognized technical profile to benefit department on delivery of service

  • Mentors and coaches’ junior technical staff and managed services staff

  • Works with management to review status of projects, performance targets, strategies and operations

  • Accountable for representing Applied Intelligence in the role of technical lead in a project setting, providing direction to Full Time, Contract and Vendor staff

  • Raises cross functional technical issues proactively and constructively

  • Partners with architects and engineering team members to provide end to end technical oversight for project solutions as necessary

  • Provide technical leadership to a team of full-time individual contributors, contract and third-party service providers to execute the mandate of the team

  • Provides timely and constructive feedback to improve performance.

  • Works under the direction of Sr. Manager Applied Intelligence

  • Exercises substantial personal responsibility and autonomy in the areas of software design, analysis tools, approaches, outputs and methods

  • Plans own work to meet given objectives and processes

  • Decides how to balance the technical design choices between short term and long-term impact taking into consideration the cost (dollars and resources), project schedules, business value and resource availability

  • Makes technical design decisions and raises non-standard designs, architecture and patterns for review with system design and architecture groups

  • Decides when to escalate technical, project and resource risks

  • Prioritizes work to be performed by other teams related to design and build activities.

What you'll need

  • Expert software engineering skills, especially working in the cloud (Azure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT, or relevant experience

  • Minimum 10 years in building and maintaining highly scalable systems in the cloud

  • At least 5 years in a lead engineering role in a technology or a financial organization

  • Strong knowledge about AI concepts such as RAG, fine tuning, building agents, MCP, Vector Databases, etc.

  • Practical experience building Agents, integrating with MCPs securely, and building RAG models is required.

  • Experience working with the A2A specification is an asset.

  • Experience building enterprise grade web applications

  • Extensive experience in delivering fast and often using proper CI/CD principles and writing automated tests

  • Experience with implementing three- and five-year plans to aligned technology selection with TCO and ROI objectives

  • Expert knowledge of Python, Kubernetes (AKS), Web Frameworks like Angular and React, and gRPC.

  • Strong expertise with cloud (Azure) development, data lake concepts, Snowflake, Databricks, AI Foundry, and mlOps.

  • Expert knowledge of AuthN and AuthZ concepts

  • Excellent in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, planning and organizing and organizational change disciplines

  • Excellent capability to manage deliverables, influence, make recommendations, facilitate decisions, lead technical staff and organize work as it relates to the management level within Teachers’
