What is the opportunity?

The Enterprise Legal Advisory Team is staffing an Assistant General Counsel role, reporting to the VP, CLAO Shared Services & Enterprise Legal Advisory. In this role, the successful candidate will provide legal advice to RBC on ESG strategic initiatives, as well as all matters relating to Intellectual Property, Marketing & Sponsorships. In this role, you will lead a team of lawyers and paralegals providing advice to the Enterprise. This newly-created role provides a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the enterprise on important initiatives.

What will you do?

• Identify, assess and manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risk relating to ESG matters, intellectual property, marketing and sponsorships for the enterprise
• Provide sound legal risk analysis in a user-friendly manner to senior executives and assess and anticipate the needs of business and functional partners
• Drive strategic thinking about enterprise business drivers, significant trends, key issues and implications for senior business and functional partners
• Act as an escalation point and strategic decision-maker for all legal issues related to ESG strategy, sustainability, marketing, intellectual property and sponsorship
• Lead a team of legal professionals providing strong leadership and direction to achieve a culture of high performance and superior individual and team results

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

• JD/LLB from a recognized law school
• Member in good standing of a law society or bar association
• 12+ years of relevant experience in private practice and/or in-house at a financial institution
• Ability to develop a quick understanding of the requirements and role of key internal stakeholders and senior executives and build effective relationships with them
• Securities Litigation experience is strongly preferred
• Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment and balancing competing work demands, prioritizing and being responsive to business imperatives

Nice-to-have

• Significant managerial experience
• Significant experience with ESG matters
• Experience with securities regulators
