What is the opportunity?

The Personal Banking & Commercial Banking Data Management Office (DMO) is on a multi-faceted journey to modernize and formalize data management and governance capabilities across Canadian Banking, in collaboration with business stakeholders, IT teams, the Enterprise CDO team, and other Data Management Offices across RBC. The Senior Manager, Data Governance & Strategic Initiatives is responsible for the end-to-end planning, management, and implementation of cross-functional programs essential to setting up the right foundations and partnerships for the team. The role has exposure to many elements of managing data risk including data accountability, metadata management, lineage, data quality, and issue management resolution.

What will you do?

  • Develop and manage an execution plan with IT partners to adopt Enterprise Data Policy requirements and Enterprise Data Governance Tooling

  • Collaborate with Change Management and Communication COEs to develop a fit-for-purpose communication strategy and ensure implementation of the communication plan

  • Develop and maintain benefits gained from modernizing data governance capabilities within Canadian Banking

  • Assess data governance and metadata management tooling, manage large changes in existing tooling, and recommend new tooling as required

  • Lead continuous improvement projects to elevate current artefacts and develop scalable processes to adopt as we extend into new areas of data with business partners

  • Assess the current state maturity of the area’s data governance capabilities (metadata management, lineage, data quality, and controls), look outside to industry standards for appropriate recommendations for areas of improvement and ensuring this is revisited on an on-going basis

  • Champion and effect change with cross-functional partners in adopting agile, modern, non-invasive governance practices and processes that satisfy audit requirements

  • Develop engagement models and frameworks when working with new horizontal teams such as Program Management Offices, Business Analysis COE, Regulatory, Control Testing teams, Operations etc.

What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • Strong knowledge of and previous experience working with Data Management, Governance and Risk concepts and capabilities including data dictionaries, lineage, metadata management, data quality and issue remediation

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) including meeting facilitation and presentation skills, with a proven track record of simplifying and distilling complicated messages

  • Strategic thinker with proven ability to drive results in a cross-functional environment

  • Strong organizational awareness, demonstrated ability to anticipate and communicate risks and issues and escalate when required

  • Proven collaboration, impact, influence and change management capabilities across business, IT, and functions

Nice-to-have:

  • Project/program management, change management, and/or business analysis experience

  • Experience with business cases and management reporting

  • Working knowledge of the data management tools including Collibra, IBM Information Analyzer or other data quality and analytics tools

  • Understanding and/or experience with internal controls is an asset
