What is the opportunity:
As Managing Counsel, Personal Financing Products (GG06), you will support the goals of the SVP & Deputy General Counsel, Products & Businesses in achieving the business/operations, strategic priorities and operational performance goals of the Law Group. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Personal Banking Products, you will provide legal services to the Personal Financing Products line of business.
What will you do:
Personal Lending Legal Advice: This position is responsible for providing all aspects of legal advice in connection with personal lending products. This will include legal and regulatory advice relating to consumer protection (federal and provincial), mortgage lending, conditional sales agreements, term loans, point of sale loans, and lines of credit. The role will advise of anticipated changes in legal requirements affecting its activities and operations. The role will support escalations to the product owners relating to particular personal lending and mortgage related issues. You will collaborate with other Law Group colleagues where necessary to provide appropriate legal advice.
Business Strategy: The role will partner with the business unit and provide advice in connection with the business unit’s strategic goals, objectives, business plans and initiatives, and will support advocacy efforts and industry work. The role will also advise on transformational projects and new initiatives undertaken by the lines of business. The role will work closely with the Assistant General Counsel in advising the business on initiatives that involve personal lending and consumer protection.
Regulatory Compliance: You will work closely with Canadian Banking Compliance and first line compliance to provide advice on regulations and assist on regulatory projects.
Contract Negotiation: You will assist in the negotiation and drafting of agreements with third parties who engage with the business unit on a variety of initiatives and projects.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have:
Bachelor of Law (Common Law or Civil) from a recognized law school.
Member of the Bar in any Canadian Province or Territory with at least 8 years of experience in personal lending and consumer protection.
Excellent communication, negotiation and drafting skills.
Ability to provide strategic input to the business as well as strong risk assessment and business judgment.
Be comfortable managing competing priorities, making independent decisions, and working under tight timelines
Ability to navigate complex legal frameworks and ability to remain current on relevant laws, regulations, rulings, interpretations and jurisprudence covering multiple products.
Ability to oversee and coordinate legal advice on horizontal projects, including the instruction of external counsel as required.
Ability to analyze legal risk in context of business realities, and be flexible in approach
